Technology, no doubt has made our lives simpler and we can not even imagine living without it. It gave us mobile apps by which we can order food by sitting in our homes and we also can monitor and keep track of our health which was not possible unless we visit a doctor a few decades ago. Moreover, It has given us virtual maps, like Google Maps so that we never lose our way.
But we are not the only one whose life has been made simpler, It has made the life of conmen simpler who are using it to conduct heists. A gang of five people used Google Maps to identify and rob temples in Karnataka. According to The Times Of India, the gang used Google Maps to identify temples which are located in deserted areas in Karnataka’s Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts. Starting from September 2018 the gang has robbed 11 temples in those areas and taken away 1.2 lakhs of valuable items from the citizens.
According to the report, none of all those gang members whose age is between 19-26 years are criminals or have a past criminal record of conducting such heists. They came from a different professional background and joined their hands to carry out such robberies during the lean work period.
The report says that the gang used Google Maps to search the temples in remote and accessible areas where they could formulate a plan to conduct a heist before they actually execute that. Chamarajanagar police had been getting a lot of complaints about a bunch of robberies in the area. They looked into the matter and identified the pattern of the gang and formed a special investigation team to nab the gang members after persistent complaints from that area.
The police’s efforts paid off soon and they nabbed the gang who were unaware of what the state police was planning. The Chamarajanagar police told to the publication that in last five months, the gang has robbed two temples in Mysuru and nine temples in Chamarajanagar.
During the investigation, the gang revealed that they used Google Maps to look for the temples in deserted areas as those attract fewer visitors. When the police did the online search for the robbed temples. their information checked out. The police have recovered sandalwood among other items from the gang members.
