Apple believes that the effects of human-caused climate change which continues to impact the planet will help iPhone sales. They believe that the customers will be looking to show more confidence in mobile devices that can alert them of any danger and save them from any disastrous situation.
A nonprofit environmental disclosure organization called CDP commissioned many top companies to provide them a report on their company’s environmental impact as well as on how climate might affect them. The company received responses from over 7000 companies around the world including 1800 from the US.
The industry has slowly been preparing for what is to come since the Trump administration continues to roll back policies to protect the environment. All the responses CDP received many of them were expected, for example, telecommunication companies are worrying about their infrastructure getting knocked out and insurance companies are planning for higher payouts.
Disney, for instance, is worried that rising temperatures may prevent the guests from staying at their parks and Intel and Coca Cola both are worried that droughts could increase the costs.
Apple was one of the companies who saw climate change as a room for growth. Apple’s features like weather predictions, flashlight and emergency contacts can be very helpful in times of danger and Apple believes that many customers will want these. Their response included the following statement.
As people begin to experience severe weather events with greater frequency, we expect an increasing need for confidence and preparedness in the arena of personal safety and the well-being of loved ones [… Apple’s devices] can serve as a flashlight or a siren; they can provide first aid instructions; they can act as a radio, and they can be charged for many days via car batteries or even hand cranks.
Apple declined to comment further and most of the report was not made public. Apple received an “A” rating from CDP on their current environmental performance along with other 29 companies from the US. Other companies who believe to get benefit from climate change are from the healthcare and building material field.
Considering the lack of concerns of the current administration for the environment, Unless a drastic change is made in near future, we can expect to see effects of climate change on the products we buy.
