Reportedly the Facebook is in negotiation with Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for a settlement which would put an end to the agency’s investigation into Facebook‘s privacy practices –
Both sides haven’t agreed on the final amount yet but according to a source, we’re looking for billions dollar fine that would be the largest the FTC has ever imposed against any technology company.
If Facebook and FTC agree on the terms then a settlement would save a lot of time and money in legal fees. This would also put Facebook one step closer to putting all this disaster behind.
A Facebook’s spokesman confirmed with the publication that this is in discussion with the FTC but denied to provide any further information about this. If the matter ends without any settlement then FTC may be forced to take the issue up in the court. Legal would drag on for years and millions of dollars will be spent on legal fees.
Facebook‘s troubles started with FTC last year after the Cambridge Analytica data scandal. However, the bigger issue is that this latest issue might violate a 2011 agreement the social network made with the agency to settle the previous privacy issues.
