Streaming will never be as simple or as affordable as it is now. WarnerMedia and Disney are set to launch their own streaming services in 2019 to challenge Netflix’s dominance in the streaming world. As a result, Netflix’s users won’t be able to watch hit movies like “Black Panther” or Moana because these will reside only on Disney’s subscription service.
An AT&T unit, WarnerMedia will soon have its own streaming service to show blockbuster movies and HBO series.
Users will have to determine between paying more each month for multiple subscriptions or losing access to their favorite shows, dramas, comedies, and musicals.
Paul Verna said at eMarketer, a digital research company.
There’s definitely a lot of change coming, People will have more choices of what to stream, but at the same time the market is already fragmented and intimidating and it is only going to get more so.
According to a research firm Deloitte, About 55% of US residents are subscribed to paid streaming services which were only 10% in 2009. Same like Netflix, HULU and Amazon Prime tempted people to cancel their traditional cable TV packages and the newer services are likely to dismantle those options.
Disney Plus will be launched late next year with new Star Wars and Marvel movies along with its own library of animated and live action shows and movies. They have not announced about the pricing yet but the CEO Bob Iger said with an analysis that it will be less than Netflix who charges $8 – $14 a month, since it’s library will be smaller.
AT&T hasn’t announced about the pricing yet but their plans are three tier offering from WarnerMedia. Individual channels such as ESPN, CBS, Fox are also getting into it. Every Major channel will launch a streaming service to their users in the next 5 years, A research group TDG predicts.
To keep their audience loyal, Netflix and other streaming services have invested heavily in original movies and the TV shows. Netflix said on Wednesday that at 1st week of Sandra Bullock thriller “Bird Box”, over 45 million subscribers have watched it on its service which is the biggest first-week success of any movie made for the company.
First week’s audience means, nearly 3rd of 137 million total subscribers watched that from December 21 to December 27 and then a holiday season stretch when people have more free time and aren’t working.
AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said at an analyst conference earlier this month,
I think all media companies are coming to grips with the reality that you better establish a relationship directly with your audiences,
A multiplicity of streaming services could confuse the customers to get a full slate of programming. Because soon TV watchers may have to subscribe to multiple streaming services instead of one or two, because all the content won’t be available on a single service.
According to Leichtman Research Group,
The total cost of streaming services could approach to avg cost of a cable connection bill (excluding the cost of the internet). Which is around $107 per month.
Forrester’s Nail said that
It’s unlikely any of the services individually can charge more than $10 per month, The great unknown is how many individual streaming services people are willing to sign up for.
